Mixed Berry Frappe
Happy New Year 2014 🙂
I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and a well deserved break
I thought I would start the year off with an antioxidant hit from this delicious mixed berry frappe
When I think frappe, I immediately think coffee, however according to Wikipedia, one of the meanings of a frappe is “A frozen fruit-flavoured dessert made with shaved ice” and that describes this perfectly
This frappe is a delicious blend of mixed organic frozen berries, some tinned pears I had leftover from making the cashew cream that went into the Strawberry Santas, some of the juice from the tinned pears and ice. Drinks like these make it very easy to increase your fruit intake.
Most of you I am sure are already aware that berries are one of the best sources of antioxidants, which help to prevent cancers and many other diseases, reduce inflammation and slow down the aging process, but did you know they are also high in fibre (which can also reduce your risk of cancers and help keep your digestive system in tip-top shape) and they are a good source of many other important vitamins and minerals (including folate, potassium, magnesium and vitamin C). Luckily they also taste delicious and just happen to be very low in calories!
Despite this being the season for berries, frozen ones really are the best for this drink and are still much cheaper to buy. I keep a good supply of many different berries in my freezer at all times not only for occasions such as this, but they are also great to throw into muffins or desserts or just quickly thaw and add to breakfast. They make a fantastic quick ice-cream too (recipe to come soon!).
I hope you enjoy this frappe as much as my husband and I did 🙂
