Union Representative

Based in Seattle, WA

PROTEC17 is seeking an enthusiastic, creative, and committed advocate for our members. Our Union Representatives engage in a broad scope of member advocacy, including contract negotiation and enforcement, legal advocacy, organizing, political engagement, member support, and mobilization. Candidates will be expected to have skills in these areas or an ability to rapidly become proficient. 

The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to workers' rights and experience in labor contract negotiations and administration. Formal legal training and language skills would be very helpful in the position. We will consider exceptional applicants who are new to the labor movement and the responsibilities of the position.

Union representatives are responsible for:
ABILITIES AND COMMITMENTS

  • Showing a commitment to advancing racial equity, a core priority in our strategic plan. 
  • Passionately recruiting and developing member-leaders to organize, advocate, and mobilize with their co-workers. 
  • Having a drive to create systemic change, while being capable of handling large volumes of inquiries and matters ranging from the mundane to extremely complex. 
  • Collaborating within a dynamic team environment and being comfortable working independently. 
  • Being flexible in the face of frequently shifting job demands.
  • Working hours and days as needed to meet member interests, including when necessary, long days, occasional evenings, and some weekends.
  • An ability to build consensus while being highly sensitive to the diverse interests of union members and staff.

PROFESSIONAL SKILLS

  • Read, analyze, and interpret general contract language, collective bargaining agreements, professional publications, technical procedures, governmental regulations, policies, and laws. 
  • Write professional member communications, grievances, ULPs, and other reports and correspondence.
  • Effectively present information and respond to questions from diverse groups of union members, employer representatives, elected officials, and organizational partners. 
  • Speak, and train members to speak, persuasively in advocacy forums, including negotiations, union meetings, Council meetings, and other public engagements.

CRITICAL THINKING

  • Creatively and critically research, prepare, and present grievances, conduct contract negotiations, and find resolutions to a broad scope of workplace issues. 
  • Analyze and resolve complex problems.
  • Define parameters of problems, collect information, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. 
  • Plan work to accomplish long-term, complex goals and daily, immediate tasks. 

COMPUTER SKILLS

  • Proficiently use the internet, spreadsheets, database, and word processing software such as those in the Microsoft Office suite.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Maintain a valid driver’s license, reliable automobile, and minimum auto insurance coverage.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Union representatives have significant independence and flexibility in organizing their work, which will include times spent in the office, at home, and at member workplaces, and so must be capable of working independently and remotely, including having access to the internet and a cell phone. Physical demands of the job may include sitting, standing, walking, carrying objects, and sometimes many or heavy files. The employee may occasionally work in outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

COMPENSATION
PROTEC17 offers a highly competitive compensation package that reflects the professionalism of our Union Representatives. This is a union-represented position. PROTEC17 members are fantastic, community-oriented people, and it’s a collegial, exciting place to work.

  • Salary range: $97K – $130K
  • Substantial employer retirement contribution
