Job Description
The Technical Lab Assistant performs a variety of routine laboratory tasks with precision and accuracy to support the laboratory professional staff and aid in production workflows.
Responsibilities
Sort and receive specimens in the department
Perform routine instrument maintenance
Conduct centrifugation of specimens and print additional labels as needed
Record temperature chart data; assist with specimen storage and retrieval
Prepare reagents and/or media
Set up specimens for testing: build worklists, aliquot into sample cups, inspect for clots/fibrin, prepare slides, inoculate samples
Perform QA/QC duties as assigned
Resolve pending lists and locate missing samples
Decontaminate work areas and perform weekly radioactive wipe tests
Maintain departmental files and change gas cylinders
Follow PPE and safety protocols
Utilize laboratory computer systems and PCs
Dispose of biohazardous materials properly
Complete all required training and competency checklists
Note: Tasks also include sample preparation, loading/unloading instruments, storing samples, and managing pending samples.
Qualification
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent required
Medical assistant training is helpful
Preferred: Math and science coursework
Work Experience:
No prior experience required
Special Requirements:
Ability to prioritize and multitask for efficient workstation operations
Strong retention of learned processes
Ability to interact courteously and respectfully with coworkers, internal and external customers
